Italian shipping line Grimaldi has bought out its agent at the port of Savona in Italy, Marittima Spedizioni, putting the shipping line in direct control of Savona Auto Terminal at the port.
The Grimaldi Group extends its logistics-port network through the acquisition of the company Marittima Spedizioni srl, a shipping agency operating in Savona since 1973. Historical partner of the Neapolitan group for the handling of rolling goods (cars, vans, trucks, etc.), containers and passengers in Savona, Marittima Spedizioni is the owner of Savona Terminal Auto srl, concessionaire and terminal operator in the Ligurian airport.
Located in the Docks High Alps and a short distance from the quay, Savona Terminal Auto operates on 120,000 square metres, of which 10,000 covered, with a storage capacity of over 6,000 cars. With an annual traffic potential of 250,000 vehicles, the terminal is one of the most important points of import and export in Northern Italy for major global car manufacturers and is proposed as an integrated service centre for the automotive industry, as well as a hub for the Motorways of the Sea. The number of employees at Marittima Spedizioni and Savona Terminal Auto companies is about 70 people, who carry out administrative and yard management activities.
“Savona is today one of the main Italian centres for sea traffic related to the automotive sector”, said Emanuele Grimaldi, CEO of the Group. “We therefore chose to expand our presence along the entire logistics chain, investing in the port of Savona, to support our traffic flows and offer our customers not only shipping but also integrated logistics services”, he concluded.
The President of the Port Authority of the Western Ligurian Sea, Dr. Paolo Emilio Signorini, noted with satisfaction the interest shown by the Grimaldi Group with the acquisition of Marittima Spedizioni and consequently of the Savona Terminal Auto, that in recent years has moved on average over 750 ships a year and with a forecast of growth both in terms of the traffic handled in the port basin of Savona and in Genoa, similar satisfaction is confirmed by the direct and indirect employment commitments.
Savona Terminal Auto joins the extensive network of over 20 port terminals in 12 countries around the world and operated by Grimaldi Group companies. In Italy, the Group manages terminals in the ports of Salerno, Monfalcone, Civitavecchia, Catania, Gioia Tauro, Livorno and Palermo.
There are numerous maritime services that the Grimaldi Group offers to and from the port of Savona for the transport of rolling goods. Currently the Ligurian port is connected to Spain and Morocco with several Motorways of the Sea, as well as to Northern Europe, the Mediterranean and North America, through the multipurpose ro-ro Euro-Aegean and Med-North America services. Finally, the Grimaldi Group operates a regular mixed Ro-Ro pax freight/passenger link between Savona, Barcelona and Tangier.
